Clean, drinkable water – it is essential for our survival, yet hundreds of millions of people around the world lack access to it. Each year, over 3.4 million succumb to diseases which come from drinking contaminated water. However, this problem does not affect everyone, everywhere equally. Developing nations without modern infrastructure are disproportionately impacted and need help. That is where Sand for Life Solution comes in.
Sand for Life Solutions is dedicated to bringing clean water to the people who need it the most. This summer, we are launching our first project in Ghana, where contaminated water contributes to 80% of all disease. Our project will establish a sustainable biosand filter production enterprise.
James is the Founder and Executive Director of Sand for Life Solutions. He is currently an undergraduate student at Duke University an Angier B. Duke Scholar. A social entrepreneur and activist, James is dedicated to combatting major social problems ranging from waterborne disease to youth representation in politics. He is also a published author.
Our Board of Advisors
A Civil and Environmental Enginnering Professor at Duke University, Dr. Schaad is the Faculty Advisor for Duke Engineers for International Development. His research focuses on sustainable engineering, water resources, and water treatment.
Dr. Boadu is a native Ghanaian and a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Duke. His areas of expertise include engineering and environmental geophysics. He has extensively research nitrate contamination in Ghanaian water sources.
Amy is the Founder and Executive Director of Children Inspiring Hope, a non-profit organization which connects students from Ghana and the United States. Her organization has worked in Ghana since 2008. More information about her incredible work can be found at
Ashley is an Environental Engineering PhD student at Duke and will earn her doctorate this year. She has done significant work with biosand filters, including in Haiti and Vietnam.
